What is onychoplasty?

Podiatrist taking care of a patient's onychoplasty.Onychoplasty is a pedicure/podiatry operation performed to rebuild a nail. It can be performed after a nail fungus or any other type of accident. There are many methods that rely on different techniques from each other.

Firstly, there is the antifungal gel method. It intervenes when a fungus is discovered on the nail and needs to be treated. To do this, a medical gel is applied to treat the fungus and antifungal to prevent it from reoccurring.

Secondly, there is the self-curing method. For this, a resin is applied directly to the nail with the aim of redirecting the nail during its growth to prevent it from becoming ingrown. This technique can also be used for cosmetic purposes.

Finally, there is the so-called photopolymerizable technique. It consists of the application of resin to the finger which is then photopolymerized using an LED lamp. This means that it can only harden under this type of light, otherwise it cannot catalyze and remains indefinitely sticky.

What is the necessary equipment for onychoplasty treatment?

Just like orthonyxia which requires specific equipment, after reviewing the different methods, it's time to see what's needed for an onychoplasty.

For the antifungal treatment, only a medical gel, an antifungal gel and a brush to apply it are necessary. To dry the gel, it is mandatory to use a UV lamp which will heat it and therefore harden it.

For the self-curing method, a few more pieces of equipment are needed. We are talking about liquid resin mixed with powdered resin, and also a brush to apply it.

For the photopolymerizable technique finally, suitable resin will be needed as well as a special LED lamp which allows the paste to harden. Not to mention the essential hygiene products such as gloves or a mask.
